Action Against Hunger

For over 25 years, Action Against Hunger has been at the forefront of the fight against hunger and malnutrition worldwide.

In the most affected countries, its teams do their utmost day after day to ensure that people are given access to the most basic of human rights - the right to food.

Action Against Hunger brings assistance either during the crisis itself through emergency intervention, or afterwards through rehabilitation and sustainable development programmes.

Its activities include the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of malnutrition and food security, agriculture and water and sanitation programmes. An international, non-political, non-religious and not for profit making organization, Action Against Hunger helps more than 4.2 million people in some 43 countries around the world.

Action Against Hunger operates a 3 stage process to rehabilitate the severely malnourished people who arrive at our centres.

Phase 1 – Intensive Care (7 days)

Phase I aims to stabilize the patient's metabolism and treat associated infections. Patients are on the verge of death. They are so weak that they can no longer eat solid food. Patients are given 8 to 12 meals a day.

Phase 2 – Recuperation & Weight Gain (15 – 20 days)

Phase II is designed to produce the optimal increase in a patient's weight. Patients drink a richer therapeutic milk, and the number of milk meals is reduced to six. An enriched porridge meal is introduced for patients older than one year. Throughout this phase, the medical team monitors closely to ensure that patients gain weight regularly.

Phase 3 – Preparation for the Return Home (7 days)

Patients are cured when they recover 85% of the standard weight for their size. However, Action Against Hunger's teams will remain in contact and prevent a relapse by checking their nutritional status and giving them food rations to supplement their normal diet. Action Against Hunger helps more than 4.2 million people in some 43 countries around the world.......and now so can you!
