Haiti Earthquake Appeal

On Tuesday 12th January, a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the beautiful country of Haiti, including the densely populated capital Port-Au-Prince and the surrounding area. Tens of thousands are feared dead and countless people still remain buried under rubble in the impoverished country. For those who have survived there are fears over the supply of food, water, shelter and medicine.

The Disaster Emergency Commission constitutes 13 humanitarian charities that respond to international disasters, sending medical, food and shelter aid to areas of the world stricken by natural and man-made disasters.

Although there is as yet no accurate assessment of the death toll it is clear that millions of people live in the affected area. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, greatly increasing the risk that people will suffer or die in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Please visit the Haiti Earthquake Appeal website to see how you can help.

Compassion in World Farming’s latest campaign is led by River Cottage Chef, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall; Chicken Out! continues the call to end intensive farming for broiler chickens.

Standard meat chickens reared in intensive systems are grown from newly hatched chick to oven-ready bird in just 39 days. These birds are bred to increase weight rapidly and at least 25% of them suffer from lameness and discomfort related to their excessive growth rates. Millions of broiler chickens die from heart failure in these sheds.

Compassion in World Farming’s Chicken Out! team will visit key towns and cities over the next few weeks to persuade the UK to opt for higher welfare quality, such as RSPCA Freedom Food, as the minimum standard when buying chicken products or prepared meals. The intensively farmed chicken blog at www.chickenout.tv has also launched.

The Chicken Out! tour will take in the following UK cities:

  • Plymouth: Friday 21st August
  • Cardiff: Saturday 22nd August
  • Manchester: Friday 28th August
  • Leeds: Saturday 29th August
  • Belfast: Saturday 5th September
  • Cambridge: Friday 11th September
  • London: Saturday 12th September
  • Axminster: Thursday 17th September

Attempts are being made to save this species and a new breed-to-release program led by the Aspinall Foundation is helping to safeguard the wildcats for future generations.

The UK Online Charities site has been running for a couple of years now,  with the aim of providing a guide for finding, joining & helping UK based & International charities.

Until now, the site has remained fairly static, with information provided on each of the charities we list. However, we felt it was time to add more information & regular updates as to what is happening with our represented charities & allow you to contribute as well.

If you are a charity, or know of a charity that you feel should be featured on the site, please let us know via the contact form.
