"Oxfam" facts

Oxfam fights poverty in three ways:

Campaigning for change

Poverty isn’t just about lack of resources. In a wealthy world it’s about bad decisions made by powerful people. Oxfam campaigns hard, putting pressure on leaders for real lasting change.

Development work

Poor people can take control, solve their own problems, and rely on themselves – with the right support. Fighting poverty, we fund long-term work worldwide.

Emergency response

People need help in an emergency – fast. We save lives, swiftly delivering aid, support and protection; and we help people prepare for future crises.

Here are some more examples of how a gift can help:

  • Help build, renovate and furnish schools rooms. Buy a bit of a classroom. £5
  • Help stop the spread of HIV / AIDs. Buy condoms. £24
  • Build a toilet and help prevent the spread of deadly disease. £50
  • Help get our major humanitarian responses up and running anytime, anywhere. Buy behind the scenes heroes - a day's work. £84
  • The expertise and equipment to supply clean safe drinking water where it’s needed most. Buy a water tank. £150
  • Help to lift a farming family out of poverty, including the land and all the tools, seeds and organic fertiliser they need. £1600

Oxfam is a development, relief, and campaigning organisation that works with others to overcome poverty and suffering around the world.

Oxfam. What springs to mind? Charity shops and second-hand clothes? Donkeys from our Oxfam Unwrapped gift catalogue, bought for people in far-flung lands?

They’re part of the picture. But think bigger. Much bigger. Big enough for 99 per cent of the great British public to have heard of us. Because Oxfam is a vibrant global movement dedicated to fighting for an end to poverty and suffering worldwide. This drives everything we do. From saving lives and developing projects that give people power, to campaigning for change that lasts. That’s Oxfam in action.

The Oxfam online shop has brought together Oxfam's key products into a single coherent proposition – a shop within the oxfam.org.uk website with a single basket and checkout, consistent customer service, and consolidated fulfilment systems.

There are three Categories of product currently sold through the OOS. They are:

Oxfam Unwrapped – tangible elements of Oxfam’s programme presented for sale as virtual gifts, most notably a goat for £25.

Donated Products – items donated to Oxfam by the general public through its network of high street shops. Each item is unique and is listed by volunteers in a process similar to listing an item on ebay. NB Oxfam is the only charity in the UK to sell donated products in this way. See Appendix1 for more information.

New Products – items purchased wholesale by Oxfam to retail for profit. The range includes fair-trade fashion, foods and jewellery, eco-gadgets, and greetings cards.

Thousands of unique goods that all do good!
