Sight Savers International
For 50 years Sightsavers has been restoring sight and improving the lives of people who are irreversibly blind in poor countries around the world. Founded in the 1950s by Sir John Wilson, they have the express aim of restoring sight - wherever possible - in former Commonwealth countries.
Today, they work with partners in over 30 countries and their mission has expanded to also provide services to the blind and campaign for the eradication of needless blindness. We currently work in over 30 countries throughout Asia, African and the Caribbean.
Sightsavers works to combat blindness in developing countries, restoring sight through specialist treatment and eye care. We also support people who are irreversibly blind by providing education, counselling and training. We help the people who need it most - those living in poverty in some of the world's poorest countries. People who are blind or have low vision can easily become isolated from their community. This is because they generally find it harder to get employment, to attend school, or to take part in day-to-day community activities.
What We Do
For someone who is blind, the gift of sight is the greatest gift of all. We believe that sight is a basic human right, and that everyone - including those in the world's poorest countries - should have access to the treatment and eye care that they need. Our work is important because, as well as providing treatment that can help to restore sight, we also assist with the rehabilitation of those who are irreversibly blind - thereby helping them to make a better future for themselves.
How to support Sightsavers
In order to carry out our valuable work we need your support, without which we simply wouldn't exist. There are several ways in which you can help us, and by doing so help to prevent avoidable blindness and rehabilitate the blind in the developing world.
